Diabetes & Fasting Blood Tests
SHOULD I TAKE MY TYPE 2 DIABETES MEDICATIONS BEFORE A FASTING BLOOD TEST?
If you are asked to go for a blood test on an empty stomach, it is important to let the clinic staff know when you book your appointment that you are diabetic. That way they can schedule you for one of the earliest morning appointment slots.
On the morning of your appointment, don’t take your diabetes medications (injection or pill, except insulin) unless your doctor tells you otherwise. If you take insulin, your doctor will have given you instructions when he or she prescribed the blood test. If not, check with your health care team.
After the blood test, you can take your medications with breakfast. Unless you plan to be back home (or at work) within a few minutes of the test, it’s best to bring along your medications and something to eat so you can take them at the clinic before leaving.
If you are scheduled to undergo a test or medical procedure that requires you to have fasted for a longer period, consult your health care team to check whether or not you should take your medications. It will depend on the type and duration of the procedure, and the kind of medication you take.
